Basic Website Fixing.
The first task for anyone looking to improve their website performance, is to check their websites structure and content. There are some critical quick fixes that will improve both your customers browsing experience and lets Google and the other search engines find out what yor website is about.Customers and Google only know about you, what you tell them
Don’t assume anything, be crystal clear, from the first page, what you want them (search engines and customers) to do. This means you must use headlines, sub heads, bolding and highlights. You must then create a route of links through your site so that customers and search engines know where they are now and where to go next.Internal Linking
Your internal linking structure is vital for the search engines. They send robots to scan your site, if they get lost or reach dead ends or bad links, they will just stop and leave your site. The result of this is that your indexing will be poor. On one of my sites I did one of these cardinal sins and the results were spectacular. I had a 25 page site but used a Javascript navigation menu. I couldn’t understand why the search engines would only index 4 of my pages. I changed the navigation to a “server side include” and submitted an up-to-date sitemap. The results were immediate and dramatic. My indexed pages went up to 18 and my Google rank for my main target keyword phrase went up from 42 to number 2 Don’t underestimate the power of the basic things. Here is the list of top 10 website flaws that will cause a drop in SERPS and sales conversions:- Navigation links must not be cloaked in JavaScript
- Don’t use a “flash” entry page.
- Use plenty of correctly positioned internal links so that there are no dead ends and the route makes sense.
- On e-commerce sites, don’t require account creation. You can offer it but don’t force it.
- Include contact details clearly on your site including phone and address details.
- Use secure servers for card processing. Paypal and payment gateways are just as effective as having your own ssl functionality.
- Lack of clear website structure.
- Brief home pages. You must tell Google all about your site on the front, home or index page including text anchored links to all important and relevant pages. In almost all cases it will rank this page highest and visit it most. There is absolutely no reason, in my experience, for not increasing you homepage size. I know our web design friends will bang on about clear design, but remember the search engines don’t see clear design, they see lack of content and links.
- Mixed focus sites. Don’t try and cover “unrelated” content in one site. Set up two or more websites. Keep your sites with a headline theme with supporting sections.
- Insufficient html tags. You must have a full set of the following: Meta tags, header tags and image alt tags. You mustn’t stuff these with keywords but more just let all you visitors including the search engines know what is going on.
Remember, although you will manage loads of this yourself. There are strategies behind each of these points which I don’t want to reveal here. To get access to these you must come on board with me.
