If you are not already using Google Adwords, it is now time to start. Never before have you been given the chance to market to prospects for as little as 10p (15c) per prospect. With some savvy research and management you can create seams of very cheap internet visitor traffic that will convert well. Ideal in the current environment.

Traffic (apart from PPC) is now, marginally, free

You can benefit by sweating all that money you have pumped into SEO and link building. Internet shopping rates are going through the roof, so your share of the pie is enlarging all the time. If you have time, submit more articles, ask for more links.

Get your traffic to convert more

Get all the traffic described in the two sections above to buy more, as Jay Conrad Levinson said recently (and he will know) your customers and prospects are looking for more value, not necessarily cheaper prices. They don’t want to risk cash in this environment. Show your track record, more customer recommendations. Got an Ebay feedback score? Tell your prospects about it. Offer guarantees, free trials etc. Communicate with them in a steady and confident manner.

Add a new sign-up form now, use the current zeitgeist e.g. “download my report on how to get the best value from my widgets in the current downturn” to get new customers. But also dig out your email lists. Craft them emails in a style that reflects their mood, but offer support, confidence, guarantees etc. Remind them of why they should buy from you.

Referral

Just phone your previous customers and ask them. Get your customer lists out, including e-commerce sites who probably have 10s of thousands of previous customers, and just call them up. If your business is quiet, then you can’t claim “not enough time” for this now can you? My experience of doing this just recently for my Christmas tree campaign was fantastic. People not only wanted to re-order for this year, they were very compliant in getting more sales for us. One top customer came back to us within the hour with a fax to price up 9 real christmas trees for family, friends and employer. We got a universally positive reaction. If outward sales calls stress you, then get one of the many books about direct sales. Concentrate on showing customers service at a new level.

Give your website a fresh edit

For those of you who never change your web site because it has “been done”. Now is the time to get it edited to better reflect the current mood. Web copy always works better when it chimes with the thoughts of your reader. The more the reader nods subconsciously in their head, the more chance of a sale in the end.
